Abstract:
Nosocomial infections or hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are one of the biggest health burdens around the globe related to higher morbidity, mortality, and healthcare expenses. Most HAIs are caused by bacterial pathogens especially in intensive care units and high-risk patients. The increased incidence of antimicrobial resistance also makes treatment and control of infection an even bigger struggle. The review gives a full account of the epidemiology, the key causative pathogens, the risk factors, the dynamics of transmission, and evidence-based prevention and control measures. It is necessary to enhance infection prevention initiatives, antimicrobial stewardship, surveillance, and international cooperation to reduce the consequences of HAIs on the global level.
