Abstract:
This comprehensive article explores firmware architecture paradigms that serve as the foundation for embedded systems software design. Beginning with an examination of the evolution from monolithic structures to sophisticated architectural approaches, it details how proper architecture selection directly impacts development efficiency and product longevity. The article analyzes four primary architectural paradigms: layered architecture with its distinct functional boundaries between hardware and application logic; super loop architecture with its straightforward sequential execution model; RTOS based architecture providing deterministic performance for time critical applications; and package-based architecture enabling product customization while maintaining a unified codebase. For each paradigm, the article examines key characteristics, implementation considerations, and optimal application scenarios. The discussion extends to critical architectural design factors including resource management, reliability mechanisms, update capabilities, certification requirements, and development team organization. Drawing on multiple research studies, the article presents a holistic framework for selecting and implementing firmware architectures appropriate to specific embedded system requirements.
